The new ATX Fitness leg extension attachment offers a space-saving solution for home gyms. It provides both heavy leg extensions and smooth leg curls. Too HEAVY duty for home gyms?
This new attachment for the new line of ATX benches is extremely heavy duty and well built. The 17 kg unit weight is a testament to this. Paired with my very heavy MBX-660 bench, I have no concerns when loading it above 80 kg. Just notice how little it moves when I load it with plates in the video below. I suspect that the 100 weight rating is there only out of concern that the whole bench will tilt over.
But, there is a downside to the high quality and high unit weight. This attachment is pretty cumbersome move around and attach to the bench. For example, I am 100% sure that my wife will never be using it for this reason. I have ensured there are minimal obstacles for using it myself. It is stored at a designated and easily accessible space in my home gym.
Adjustability: the key to its performance
This attachment seems to have been designed by people who lift themselves. I have never seen any other leg extension attachments with such easy adjustabilty. The dual adjustable leg rollers make it much easier to get the desired feel without any discomfort on the exercises. Moreover, the resistance curve only drops significantly towards the very end of the leg extension.
The bearings also add to the user experience. They add to making it feel more like a real machine instead of the primitive hinge. This is especially evident on leg curls. Overall, it mimics the feel of a real leg extension and leg curl sufficiently for most home gym users. This is particularly beneficial for those limited on space.
Who should buy it?
This space saving attachment mimics the leg extensions and leg curls very well for most home gym users. It leaves no doubt about its quality. Even at ~70€ more than its nearest competitor (Powertec), I see no match for this attachment. I would thus recommend this for most home gym users.
But be aware of its weight. If you dislike using equipment that is cumbersome to set up, it will collect dust in your home gym. Additionally, if you know the exact feel of over 20 leg extension machines and you will have them sorted according to preference. Then you will likely never be satisfied with any leg extension attachment.
