Wall Mounted Barbell Storage Indepent of Stud Placement. Step-by-Step Guide

Do you find it difficult to get wall mounted horizontal barbell storage due to the placements of your studs? Here is a quick guide with minimal text and many pictures to show how I circumvented that challenge.

What you will need:

  • A pair of brackets for horizontal barbell storage (most companies sell a version of these)
  • A piece of 30 mm thick plywood (width and height depends on your needs)
  • 6 x 6 cm bolts, 12 washers and 6 nuts for mounting the brackets to the plywood
  • 6-8 x coach screws with washers for mounting the plywood to your studs
  • Paint (optional)
  • A friend to help you hang it up (not optional)

Total price: ~220 Euro (including paint)

Before building anything, you make sure to mark your studs with a stud finder and measure the distance between them. From these measurements you can determine what size your plywood needs to be to both cover the studs and be mounted symmetrically on your wall.

Now you start building. Mark the distance you want between the brackets on the back side of the plywood. Your shortest bar will decide this distance. Make a round recess corresponding to your markings as shown in the picture below.

I used a flat drill to make the recesses. They cost ~5-10 euro.

This recesses should be ~6-7 mm deep. So they can accommodate the head of the 6 cm long bolts and a washer as shown in the picture below.

Next you mount the brackets on to the bolts on the front side of the plywood. Finish of by securing them with nuts as shown in the picture below.

Remember to measure twice or more during the entire process.

Finally you screw the plywood into your studs using the coach screws. I used 6 x 1 cm thick and 10 cm long coach screws.

Coach screw

You can’t be too careful when choosing your bolts and screws. A six bar holder like mine will have to hold around 130 kg. And remember to bring a friend to help you lift the plywood.

You can then choose to paint it if you got a colour scheme you want to adhere to.

Remember to use painters tape if you don’t paint the plywood before mounting it to the studs.

I am extremely happy with how my horizontal barbell storage turned out. Although, I do fear that I will have to extend it one day.

I hope this was helpful! Lastly, I am no engineer or carpenter. So please consult an expert to make sure you get strong enough bolts and coach screws for the expected weight of your project.
